Wind energy resins

Wind energy resins

Wind turbine blades are among the largest composite structures in the world. They must carry enormous cyclic loads for decades while exposed to wind, rain and UV light. AOC supports the wind industry with iso wind resins, infusion systems, tooling resins and repair formulations, as well as with knowledge on circular end-of-life routes.

What resins for wind turbine blades must deliver

Blade resins have to support high fiber loading, efficient infusion or pultrusion, strong mechanical performance and reliable cure in large structures. They must remain durable under cyclic loading and environmental exposure, and be compatible with the reinforcement, bonding concept and production cycle of the blade manufacturer.

Iso and infusion resins for wind components

Isophthalic resins combine good mechanical properties with hydrolysis resistance, making them suitable for nacelle covers, spinners and other wind components. AOC offers infusion-grade resins such as Synolite™ 7412-G-1 for RTM and infusion, and Synolite™ 1967-G-30 for large components made through vacuum infusion. Vacuum infusion can produce laminates up to around 125 m long with controlled resin content.

    Tooling for large blade moulds

Blade moulds are typically made from composites. Neomould® tooling systems provide the low shrinkage, dimensional stability and surface quality needed for very large moulds, up to around 125 m.

    Repair of wind turbine blades

Field repairs need to cure fast and work in difficult conditions. Beyone™ 130-A-01 is a fast-cure, styrene-free repair formulation designed for epoxy-based wind turbine blades.

    Next™ wind and circularity

Sustainability in wind goes beyond the turbine's output. AOC offers lower-footprint formulations under the Next™ label and contributes to industry work on blade circularity. Cement co-processing is one proven route for end-of-life composites: the resin fraction replaces fossil fuel, while glass fiber and minerals become cement raw material. A peer-reviewed LCA calculated GWP savings of more than 800 kg CO2 eq. per tonne of waste compared with incineration. Reports on this topic are available in our downloads.

Frequently asked questions about wind energy resins

How large can composite moulds for wind blades be?

Composite tooling is a cost-effective choice for very large moulds, up to around 125 m.

What happens to wind turbine blades at end of life?

One proven route is cement co-processing, where the resin fraction replaces fossil fuel and the glass fiber and minerals become cement raw material.
