Polyester putties
Polyester putties are used to fill, repair and smooth surfaces in car body repair, boat building, woodworking, construction and road maintenance. Their performance starts with the base resin. AOC supplies a wide range of putty resins to formulators who need good sandability, adhesion and flexibility in their end products.
What makes a good putty resin?
Putty formulators look for a resin that accepts high filler loadings, cures quickly at room temperature and sands easily without clogging the paper. Adhesion to the substrate is essential, whether that is steel, galvanised steel, wood, concrete or an existing laminate. Flexibility determines whether the repair can follow movement without cracking.
Rigid, semi-rigid and flexible polyester putties
AOC offers putty resins for every performance profile:
- Rigid: Synolite™ 9443-U-1, a multi-purpose rigid isophthalic resin, and Synolite™ 0432-U-1, a rigid orthophthalic grade.
- Semi-rigid: DCPD-based Synolite™ 6494-U-2, 6494-U-3 and 0542-U-2 for easy-sanding, multi-purpose putties.
- Flexible: THPA-based Synolite™ 2710-U-2, Palatal® P 51-01 and Palatal® K 770 V-21 for putties and fillers that need high flexibility.
Special putty requirements
Some applications ask for more. Synolite™ 7259-U-2 is designed for putties that need adhesion to galvanised steel. B013-SSA-05 is a vinyl ester putty resin for higher mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. For concrete and road repair, P-802 offers a multi-purpose DCPD solution.
Styrene-free putty resins
Lower emissions and improved working conditions are increasingly important for putty users. Beyone™ 420-A-01 and P-246 are styrene-free resins for putty applications, while Palatal® K 790 V-06 is a styrene-free vinyl ester for chemical anchoring and putties. Several of these products carry the Next™ label.
Frequently asked questions about polyester putties
What is the difference between rigid and flexible polyester putties?
Rigid putties offer high hardness and easy sanding for stable substrates. Flexible putties, often based on THPA resins, follow movement and vibration without cracking, for example on car bodies.
Are styrene-free polyester putties available?
Yes. AOC offers styrene-free base resins such as Beyone™ 420-A-01 and P-246 for formulators who want to reduce emissions.
