ISO NPG gelcoat resins

An ISO NPG gelcoat forms the visible, protective outer layer of a composite part. It has to look good on day one and keep looking good after years of sunlight, water and wear. AOC supplies high-quality Iso/NPG base resins to gelcoat formulators who need consistent quality and proven weathering performance.

What is an ISO NPG gelcoat?

The name refers to the resin backbone. "Iso" stands for isophthalic acid and "NPG" for neopentyl glycol. Together they create an unsaturated polyester with excellent resistance to water, UV light and mild chemicals. Gelcoat manufacturers combine this base resin with pigments, fillers, thixotropic agents and additives to create the final gelcoat product.

Why formulators choose Iso/NPG for gelcoats

Compared with standard ortho resins, an Iso/NPG gelcoat base offers clear advantages for surfaces that are exposed every day:

    • Superior weathering and gloss retention outdoors.
    • Low water absorption and good resistance to osmosis and blistering.
    • Good colour stability after cure.
    • Reliable hardness and scratch resistance for long-lasting surfaces.

AOC base resins for ISO NPG gelcoats

Our Iso/NPG range includes Synolite™ 0270-N-2 and Synolite™ 0271-N-2, high-quality Iso/NPG resins for gelcoats with superior weathering characteristics. Palatal® A 410-01 serves both industrial applications and gelcoat production. For formulators who prefer a pure isophthalic base, Palatal® A 400-05 and Synolite™ 8280-N-1 are available, while Palatal® A 400-01 FC is suited to food-contact applications. For cost-driven gelcoats, Synolite™ 8012-N-1 offers an Ortho/NPG alternative.

Applications for gelcoat iso npg systems

Iso/NPG gelcoats protect boats and yachts, swimming pools, sanitary ware, transport panels, wind turbine components and building elements. In each case the gelcoat must bond well with the laminate behind it. AOC also supplies matching laminating resins for marine and building and construction applications, so the full build-up works together.

    Styrene-free gelcoat options

Customers who want to reduce styrene in their formulations can use Beyone™ 400-N-01, a multi-purpose styrene-free resin for making styrene-free gelcoats. It is part of our wider effort to offer lower-emission alternatives without compromising on processing.

Frequently asked questions about ISO NPG gelcoat resins

Is an ISO NPG gelcoat better than an ortho gelcoat?

For exposed surfaces, usually yes. The combination of isophthalic acid and neopentyl glycol gives better weathering, water resistance and colour stability. Ortho/NPG bases remain a cost-effective option for less demanding parts.

    Does AOC sell finished gelcoats?

AOC supplies base resins to gelcoat formulators, who add pigments, fillers and additives to create the final gelcoat. Our Technical Service supports formulators in selecting and fine-tuning the base resin.
